Wired To Work

Preached by

Have you ever felt unfulfilled by your work, like there must be more to life than the daily grind? That the secret to happiness lies in a more exciting career or job title? You’re not alone. Our culture sells the false promise that fulfilling work is out there, if only we continue climbing the ladder of success. But what if true purpose and satisfaction in your work wasn’t out there, but within?

This presentation will challenge traditional thinking about work and careers. It will encourage you to look inward at your unique talents and skills, outward to how your work can contribute value, and reflect on how you can find deeper motivation beyond money and status. By exploring your deep wiring and rethinking your work’s higher purpose, you have the power to transform your daily efforts into a source of lasting fulfillment.

  1. Work is not a result of the fall but was part of the original design in Genesis. God worked and declared his work good, showing work has inherent value and purpose.
  2. Men are wired for adventure and accomplishment, but modern culture sells empty promises that work alone can fulfill this desire. True purpose and satisfaction comes from aligning work with God’s design.
  3. To find purpose and meaning in work, one must look inward at their gifts and talents, outward at how their work benefits humanity, and upward at how their work achieves God’s purposes. Work should contribute to the common good and further God’s mission.
  4. One’s identity and self-worth should not be derived from work accomplishments but from their identity in Christ. When this is secure, work can be deeply fulfilling while avoiding the emotional rollercoaster of tying identity to externals.
  5. Both past and present, the path to purpose involves investing in oneself by discerning talents, finding work that aligns with them, and using current work as opportunity rather than waiting for ideal conditions or career.

In reexamining how you approach work, you have an opportunity to rewrite your career story. Rather than feeling ruled by externals like your job title or next promotion, you can take the reins and guide your efforts each day with intention. Making others’ lives better through your work gives it renewed significance, lifting you above the emotional rollercoaster of equating your worth to accomplishments alone.

There is freedom and strength in working not just for yourself, but to further positive change. I encourage you to start small – look for one way today to shift your mindset and effort toward better serving others through your work. In doing so, you will find deeper motivation to turn ordinary tasks into opportunities that uplift both yourself and the world around you. This is the path to true, long-lasting fulfillment – and it starts with you taking the first step toward realigning your work with its higher purpose. I hope you will choose empowerment over the empty promises peddled by our culture. The choice, and your future, is yours.
