Heaven: Who Goes There?

The Role of Rules

Preached by

Gaining entrance into heaven has caused confusion for many people. Many assume that good people go to heaven since heaven seems like a reward for a good life. Keeping rules will not get a person into heaven.

The Ten Commandments:

  • The laws God gave ancient Israel were ahead of their time
  • They provided rights and protections for the underprivileged
  • God gave Israel the law because they were already in relationship with Him, not to establish a relationship

Jesus fulfills the law

  • Jesus said the Passover celebration should now be in remembrance of Him
  • He established a new covenant based on His blood, not animal sacrifices
  • This new covenant was for the whole world, not just Israel

Rules are for those already in the family

  • The rules are God’s way of showing His love
  • They reflect how He wants His children to live

We are reconciled to God by grace, not through keeping rules. Jesus’ death on the cross paid the price for our sins, establishing a new covenant of forgiveness. We choose to follow God’s ways out of gratitude for what He has done for us through His Son.

For those who are not Christians, the rules do not apply. But God’s love extends to all, and His invitation to enter into relationship with Him through faith in Jesus Christ still stands. God’s desire is not just that we obey commands, but that we know Him and experience His love and forgiveness freely offered through the death and resurrection of His Son.
