Israel and Othniel: Forget or Follow?

Preached by

Have you ever forgotten something important – only to realize later the impact of your forgetfulness? Today we’ll examine a troubling cycle of forgetfulness that plagued God’s people for generations. Time and again, they failed to remember their covenant with God and the mighty works He had done for their ancestors. As a result, tragedy ensued.

But this somber history also points to a greater truth: that God remains faithful, even when we are not. And it recalls individuals like Othniel, who found strength in remembering God’s promises. By exploring Israel’s past, may we chart a wiser course for our own futures. Let’s uncover the root of their forgetfulness and see how fully committing to remembering God can change everything.

  • The first generation under Joshua was responsive to God’s word and active in their faith. They obeyed God and saw Him do great things.
  • The next generation forgot God and what He had done. They abandoned God and worshipped idols.
  • Forgetting God leads to spiritual apathy and apostasy. We must remember God’s faithfulness.
  • Othniel was the first judge. He had God’s spirit on Him and delivered Israel from their enemies, giving them rest. He points us to Christ.
  • We must avoid the cycle of sin that Israel fell into. We must remember God’s promises and presence.

The choice before us is clear. Will we follow in Israel’s footsteps, drifting through life oblivious to God’s presence? Or will we stand apart as people defined by our remembrance of Him? True change starts from the inside out as we renew our minds to God’s faithfulness each day. When challenges come, we can face them confident in His guidance and support. And in each new season, we have opportunity to point others to the hope we’ve found in truly remembering our Lord.

My prayer is that this message ignites a fire in us to never forget the one who holds our future. May our lives proclaim that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever – and that His promises can anchor us through any storm. If we but remember Him, all things are possible. Let this be our resolution as we go forth in His name.
